23.07.2025
Which rent fits your budget? Our free rent calculator shows you – so you can search efficiently for your new home in Switzerland.
How the rent budget calculator works
- Enter your net income and your monthly costs as whole numbers. Your entries are saved automatically and can be recalled at any time on the same device.
- Below, you’ll instantly see your maximum rent based on your inputs (capped at 30% of your net income).
- For couples or shared households: you can add as many people as you like – each person enters their own figures and the calculator will automatically work out the total for the combined rent.
- You’ll find more tips just below the calculator.
Tips and guidance for the rent calculator
- The rent calculator is free to use as often as you like. The maximum rent it calculates is an indicative figure to help you plan realistically – without guarantee.
- Enter all costs on a monthly basis: for annual amounts (e.g. CHF 240 for household insurance), divide by 12 and enter 20.
- In flatshares or couple households, it’s worth splitting shared expenses such as electricity, internet or the Serafe TV/radio licence fee between you, and entering them that way in the calculator. That leaves more room for rent.
- By default, 5% of your net income is set aside as a reserve for unexpected expenses. You can adjust this amount anytime.
- Be honest with yourself when filling it in: overly optimistic figures can lead to an unrealistically high rent – with possible consequences for your application or later in everyday life.
- For many tenancies, a rent deposit equivalent to three months’ rent is required. If you don’t have this available, there are alternatives such as SwissCaution.
- For flatshares: check with the property management in advance whether a shared household is permitted and how many people are allowed to move in.
