Description
The Chiasso railway station, in the municipality of the same name (Mendrisio district), is located in the southern part of the Canton of Ticino and is the main border station between Switzerland and Italy.
The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) completed a conservative renovation of Chiasso station in 2023, with a total investment of around 15 million Swiss francs.
Within the building are administrative offices and various commercial activities, including a Convenience Shop AVEC open seven days a week, a snack bar, the SBB Travel Centre, a pharmacy, a take-away with Argentine specialties, and a barber shop.
In recent years, the station area has benefited from further redevelopment work, including the creation of the new bus terminal and the new station square, both of which came into full operation in 2023.
A short walk north of the station, the Canton has launched the design of the new headquarters of the Technical Professional Centre for the textile sector (CPT), which will include the School of Arts and Crafts (SAM) for tailoring and the Higher Specialized School (SSS) for clothing and fashion design. The work is underway and completion is scheduled for 2028.
