Myth: «Switzerland has the lowest homeownership rate in Europe.»

✅ That's true.

According to a publication released by the Swiss Federal Office for Housing (FOH) in 2025, only around 36% of permanently occupied homes in Switzerland are owner-occupied. This means Switzerland does indeed have the lowest homeownership rate in Europe.

There are several reasons for this low homeownership rate. High property prices and strict financing requirements make buying a home difficult for many people. However, property prices vary considerably across the country. Outside urban areas, homes are often significantly more affordable than in major metropolitan regions.
