The municipality of Brissago is located on the north shore of Lake Maggiore, southwest of Ascona on the border with Italy. Brissago is mainly known for the Brissago Islands, which have a botanical garden. Due to the mild climate, around 1,500 different plant species can thrive. These include palms, bamboo and eucalyptus, as well as kiwi and bananas. The garden was laid out from 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger and expanded from 1927 by the subsequent owner of the islands, the department store millionaire Max Emden.
