Description

Located on Monte Crovero above the Ivrea lakes, the Montalto Dora castle dominates the surrounding valleys with its imposing presence. The building (over 2,000 m²) surrounds a paved inner courtyard, ideal for events and ceremonies, and houses 11 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and a beautiful 15th-century chapel. The surrounding land (6.6 hectares) also includes a small castle and a farm.

The village of Montalto Dora is about 2 km from the castle and offers all necessary services. Other historic towns in Northern Italy and renowned ski resorts are within less than two hours by car.

The castle is located in an exceptional landscape environment: the Canavese area is unique in terms of geological and natural interest and still bears clear signs of the Ice Age, with the moraine hill chain Serra d'Ivrea and the five lakes (including the bathing lakes Sirio, Nero, and Pistono) that characterize the region and are considered a community protected area.

Thanks to its excellent state of preservation, the castle offers the perfect setting for events, weddings, conferences, and business meetings. In the past, the castle was also used as a film location for medieval scenes, including the series La Freccia Nera (based on the novel of the same name by Robert L. Stevenson) from 2006.

Another option is to convert the castle into a luxury hotel.

REAL ESTATE DESCRIPTION
The castle (2,030 m², 9 rooms, and 11 bathrooms) is built on several sloping floors that adapt to the rock and extend around a large central courtyard, which is paved (over 400 m²). The levels are connected by four comfortable elevators.

On the lower floor, there are the old wine cellars with wooden ceilings and stone floors: in these cellars, the rock to which the castle is attached is clearly visible. On the ground floor, around the central paved courtyard, there are various rooms and lounges, a dining room with kitchen, sanitary facilities, and an office. The latter was intended in the past as a guard post, directly at the main gate of the castle.

In a slightly elevated position, above the kitchen and on the first level of the square tower, there are two rooms with en-suite bathroom (both accessible directly from the castle courtyard via an external staircase).

On the first floor of the noble area, there is then a large living room with a fireplace, a corner room also with a fireplace, three rooms with private bathroom (one of which is in the square tower) and two large libraries with an adjacent reading room.

On the second floor, there are three living rooms/lounges and three rooms with en-suite bathroom (one always in the square tower).

Finally, by climbing inside the square tower, you reach the last room, also with an en-suite bathroom, which offers a spectacular view of the mountains and the surrounding valleys.

In a corner of the main courtyard, there is the medieval chapel (90 m²) with 15th-century frescoes and the adjacent bell tower.

In a corner of the castle, accessible via a staircase from a secondary courtyard, there is the guardian's house (75 m², 2 rooms, and 2 bathrooms), built on two levels, consisting of a living room with kitchen and bathroom on the lower floor, two bedrooms and bathroom on the upper floor.

A second smaller building (220 m²) is located a short distance from the main castle and consists of various rooms currently used as storage and overlooking a spacious inner courtyard. This building was probably used in the past as a guest house.

In a secluded location below the castle, there is an old farm (110 m²) that needs renovation and is distributed over two floors, currently used as storage. The building is located on the slope and has direct access to both levels.

The castle has the shape of a quadrilateral (about 180 m in circumference) with four round towers at the corners. The square keep allows a complete view of the Ivrea lakes and secures control over the valley. The inner halls of the fortress have all been renovated, with the appearance largely restored to that of De Andrade. Recent maintenance work has kept the castle in excellent condition. This work has restored the internal plaster, executed with terrazzo floor, stone, and wood where necessary. The upper floors of the building still show all the characteristics of an aristocratic house: wooden floors, decorated wooden beams, coffered ceilings, monumental stone fireplaces, antique furniture, and many small details that make up the charm of the building.

From the square tower, you can still access the magnificent walkway that runs around the castle. Restored between the 14th and 15th centuries, this walkway preserves almost entirely the appearance of the 14th century, with continuous paving and defensive embrasures, and offers an extraordinary view of the surroundings. The round towers are accessible from the walkway and, via a staircase, you can reach the top of each tower.

The chapel in the castle courtyard shows various wall frescoes from the 15th century. The south side houses a painting of Saint Christopher, attributed to the painter Giacomino da Ivrea, as well as the Madonna with Child. The interior, consisting of a single nave (or hall), preserves frescoes with the stories of the saints: on the left is Saint Margaret in prayer with the dragon, in the center Saint Liberata with Saints Servatius and Protasius, and on the right Saint Lucia. The monument offers numerous potentials, as inside there is an original cycle of frescoes being worked on.

Around the castle, there are about 6.6 hectares of land, partly covered with meadows, fields, and lush woods that follow the slope of the hill.

Particularly characteristic is the access road to the castle, which winds its way along the hillside, starting from a convenient parking lot located just before the castle itself. The path is surrounded by merlature walls with wayfinding and leads uphill to the main portal of the castle, which gives access to the courtyard.
