The name Gellert comes from Göllhart (cleared hardwood), because the area had to be free of trees as part of the city fortifications. Basler families planted orchards and vineyards there. On St. Jakobs-Strasse, the road leading to the Birstal, the summer casino stood in an extensive park from 1824. The city walls were gradually demolished from 1859, towers torn down, and the moats filled in, and the land was released for construction. The St. Alban-Tor was preserved.
