Description
Original Valais house with private forest Origin of the name and the Zurbriggen family
The name of the hamlet historically appears as early as around the year 1200. In this era, the inhabitants of the Saas Valley often took their surnames directly from the places, hamlets, or circumstances where they lived. Those who lived by the bridge were referred to in the dialect as someone "zer Briggu". This developed into one of the most well-known and historically significant family names in the valley: Zurbriggen. Geographical significance in the old Saas Valley
Historically, the hamlet formed an important station on the old valley paths. The Saas Valley has been closely connected to the Italian Walser areas (such as Macugnaga) via the Monte Moro Pass since the Late Middle Ages. Zer Briggu was located directly on the Saaser Vispa, near the current border with the neighboring municipality of Saas-Almagell. The bridge at this location secured the crossing of the river and connected the various hamlets like Unter den Bodmen with the historical pack trails.
