Fraudulent advertisements
Be on your guard when you come across advertised residential property which seems too good to be true. You may be dealing with a fraudulent advertisement. Report any suspicious advertisements to ImmoScout 24 Customer Service.
Not all fraudulent advertisements look the same. The residential properties being advertised may differ, as can the name of the advertiser.

However, such advertisements are essentially always set up in the same way. There are a number of characteristics which can help you to identify this kind of fraud.

How to recognise a fraudulent advertisement

The advertised property is situated in a prime location, is priced very attractively and there are beautiful pictures to make it look particularly good.

You can usually only contact the advertiser by e-mail, after which it is explained that you can only view the property upon advance payment of at least one month’s rent. Arrangements to pick up the keys are often made using an international logistics company, for which a false website is given.

What can you do?

If you are not sure whether you are dealing with a fraudulent advertisement or not, take note of the following advice:
  • If you come across a particularly attractive offering, be on your guard.
  • Check the contact details. Names and addresses may not be the same. You can do a search using an Internet search engine for sellers’ pseudonyms, company names, peoples’ names, etc.
  • Before you buy or rent the property, find out in exactly what condition it is in.
  • Never transfer any money until you have looked at the property in person and the relevant contracts have been legally signed.
  • Do not make any prepayments e.g. via Western Union or MoneyGram.
  • Never send originals or copies of documents such as your passport, ID, driver's licence or bank statement as proof of trust. Criminals could misuse these for attempts at fraud.
  • If you are the seller, never accept payment by cheque. It may bounce!
  • Avoid using 0900 numbers and text messaging services.
